personality:

Dean is a stubborn jackass. THE END. EVERYONE GO HOME.

...But being a little more in depth on that, he does have his reasons for his stubborn attitude. And his "No you go fucking die in a fire" attitude. He didn't really get to lead a normal childhood, so he had to learn some pretty hardcore defense mechanisms. His mother's death overshadowed everything in his life, and was what was driving his family to chase after revenge.

With the way he was raised after his mother's death, Dean really did have to grow up extremely fast in a short amount of time. He was constantly being left in crummy motel rooms to look after Sam. But John, for whatever reason, had decided that Sam could never know what he was off doing. So Dean had to learn how to lie creatively pretty early on. Which later became useful when he started hunting with his father. Having to take care of Sam also meant that Dean had to learn how to bury his emotions. He couldn't let on that he was worried about their dad, or that he was disappointed that John was never around. And Dean never grew past having to do that. He constantly buries any emotions he has, until something causes him to finally break down. Even when he does actually break down and talk about his emotions, he really isn't any good at it. He gets extremely angry over whatever he's actually talking about, and is pretty quick to shove it all back down.

When it comes to getting anything done, it's Dean's way or you'll have to fight him for it. The only exception to this rule is if John is the one running the show. He follows his father's orders pretty blindly, except when it comes to anything to do with Sam. But in any other situation, Dean will take control of whatever's going on and do whatever he thinks is best. Even if people point out to him that what he's doing is stupid, he'll still do what he wants to. This did come from watching John work, and then having to hunt with Sam, he couldn't expect Sam to know what to do all the time.

His job as a hunter, and his past, comes with a deep hatred for anything not human. Demons in particular are the creatures he hates the most... But really, anything not completely human isn't worth his trouble. Dean only gets over this hatred in extreme cases, like the creature actually proving itself to be trustworthy. Not that that's easy for them to do.

Not that Dean trusts humans implicitly. For most of the series, Sam is really the only person that Dean trusts. He does eventually come to trust a few more people, but they... Tend to get killed because of the boys. He is, however, more likely to take the word of a human over the word of some creature. Again, it takes some pretty damn good proof for Dean to trust a non-human.

On the topic of Dean and humans... He's really not good at forming healthy relationships. His bond with Sam does get in the way of anyone else, and Dean refuses to see it. The only relationships their bond didn't seem to do any damage to (most of the time) is his friendship with Bobby and Ellen. They're both the best parental figures in his life, and not even his stupidity could get them to stop talking to Dean. And this saves his ass on more than one occasion.

Again, Dean is just stubborn as all hell. He does not back down easily, and will fight tooth and nail (sometimes literally) for the people he loves or the things he believes. Hell, he'll fight all out for complete strangers. He just wants to do all that he can to protect as many people as possible.

abilities/powers:

Dean Winchester, master of disguise.

first person sample:

So a hunter and a reaper get stuck in a house full of unkillable ghosts...

third person sample:

Dean wished he could say this was the first time he'd woken up after being dead for awhile. If he had even been dead, that is. Not that it mattered much. It wasn't even the first time he'd woken up in a strange place. As he sat up, he wondered vaguely if he'd crashed on the way to Lisa's. He knew he hadn't stopped anywhere to do anything... There were no more jobs, as far as he was concerned.

Turning and swinging his legs over the edge of the table, he spotted the toe tag. Bringing his foot back up to the edge, he pulled it off to read it. He wished he could say he was surprised that it wasn't any help. But, really, that's how anything went for him. Clutching the tag he finally slid off the table to stand on the frigid floor.

First order of business was to find a weapon. Then clothes. Though, the cold was making him reconsider that order. Scanning the room as he walked through it as quietly as possible, he wasn't all that surprised that he didn't spot anything useful. He would go rummaging for a possible weapon, but making too much noise didn't seem like a good idea. Once at the door, he crouched low as far to the side as he could possibly be and still push the door open enough to check the hallway. Not having any way to check the other side of the hallway, he simply stood up and rushed through the door, ready to fend off any attack.

...And then he quickly relaxed very slightly when he saw that he was alone. This was more than a little unnerving. Usually something's jumped out at him by now. It was a good thing for him he'd been in so many hospital morgues. He knew which direction to go to get to a staircase. And once he found it, he quickly climbed it to the first floor. And was, again, unnerved by the lack of anyone or anything. Frowning, he cautiously wandered out of the building to explore the seemingly abandoned city.
